Speaking as an uninteresting person… 

Yes, it is your fault if you are uninteresting.  If one or two people fade out of your life, well, it happens.  But if everyone you’ve known fades out of your life, the onus is on you. 

The reason conversations become short, the reason people stop talking to you, is because you are not putting any real effort into maintaining a connection.  For me, personally, I find it difficult to maintain the level of energy deep friendships require.  Friendships need give and take on both sides.  That means noticing and caring about things that go on in other people’s lives.  That means starting conversations and maintaining them even when it’s hard.  That means regular communication stemming from both parties.  That means being sharing interests, or at least make an attempt.

All of that takes work.  It means you can’t just talk and expect people to listen.  It means you can’t cry on people’s shoulders, but hold them at arms length when they’re in tears.

And it means you need to understand yourself.  If all of that is too much for you to handle, then accept that.  If you want to change, then start with baby steps.  I’m so lucky to have the friends I do have.  And I’m on tumblr, in part, to try to break out of a cycle that has defined a lot of how I interact with people. 

But, in the end, don’t blame people for leaving, blame yourself for not caring until they do.
